Otto Mears built to

roads and railroads
through Colorado's San Juan Mountains in the late 19th Century. His road
s included what is now called the "Million Dollar
" highw
ay between Ouray (
pronounced
you-ray)
and Silverton, CO. Railroads included
the Rio Grande
Southern, the Sil
verton
and the
Silverton Northern.
Although he did not build it, Mears also owned the Silverton, Gladstone & Northerly. The painting process for this painted figure involves several steps including cleaning, priming, and hand-painting. They are then sealed first with a varnish and finally with a dull coat agent.
